Dueling MMORPG Conventions – Blizzcon vs SOE FanFaire

Blizzcon vs SOE FanFaire
Blizzard announced that they are going to do another Blizzcon August 3-4 at the Anaheim Convention Center (same location as last year). Cost is $100 per ticket.

SOE’s long standing FanFaire tradition is taking place August 2 – 5 in Las Vegas at the Rio Hotel and Casino. Cost has not been announced but if they follow past prices there will be different packages including a One Day pass. For a whole convention package I’m sure it’s going to be over the $100 mark.

Of course, I suppose the logic is that if you play one MMORPG you probably don’t play another or if you do you probably don’t play it equally so you’ll just go to whichever convention has your game. With Blizzcon that’s obviously WoW and with SOE that’s EverQuest, EverQuest II, Star Wars Galaxies, Planetside, The Matrix and possibly Vanguard. Vanguard has held their own convention before though (Fangaurd) so it’s unknown if they will have a strong focus on that game at the SOE one.

As a veteran of these sorts of conventions… the battle may be between the two, but I strongly urge you to at least go to one of them. Meeting online friends for the first time in real life is a trip. For folks flying in from the East Coast of the US or from other countries, I suppose you could even go to Las Vegas for a few days and then leave to go to Anaheim (you’d go from Sin City to Disneyland City!).

On a side note, while not a MMORPG, QuakeCon is ALSO going on August 2-5, 2007 at the Hilton Anatole Hotel in Dallas, TX. It could happen that this free convention will siphon off folks from both BlizzCon and the SOE FanFaire. Well whatever your game… arrive in style and buy some new gaming threads and gear from OffLine! :)
